Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat: Governor Christie Nominates African-American Gay Man to NJ Supreme Court

Today, New Jersey Governor Christie nominated Bruce Harris, the gay African-American mayor of Chatham Borough to the New Jersey Supreme Court. If confirmed, New Jersey will join the growing number of states including Vermont, Colorado and Hawaii that have a member of the LGBT community on their supreme courts.

This nomination is important coming from a Republican governor during a presidential election season where GOP candidates have been unenthusiastic at best and openly hostile at worst toward LGBT rights and issues.

Mayor Harris’ nomination follows another recent trend of appointing LGBT state supreme court justices that are also members of another minority group. Colorado Justice Monica Márquez is Latina, and Hawaii Justice Sabrina McKenna is Asian-American. Hopefully, the move toward full participation of the LGBT community in the legal system will continue as state and federal benches add more LGBT and other minority members.
